Description:
Bromley Council has been commended for an initiative which sees criminals on community service sentences searching through rubbish for items which could be recycled. This allows the council to mete out suitable punishments, increase the amount of waste that they recycle which therefore leads to less tax being paid landfill tax.
The criminals, who will have been convicted of minor offences, will also be required to pick litter up from public areas, clean up graffiti and perform minor gardening work in Bromley’s parks.
A spokesman for the London Probation Service praised the initiative as being an “Innovative way of further improving the Community Payback Scheme”.
