Description:
A former Bromley Councillor’s deeds during World War Two have been honoured with the presentation of a memorial book.
French dignitaries presented the book, telling of former Councillor George Griffin's deeds in occupied France in 1944, at a ceremony in December. "The Spirit of U-Uncle Flies On" describes the pilot's exploits while on a mission to supply the French resistance.
"We owe a great debt to those who fought in World War Two and it is especially interesting to hear about the adventures of a fellow Bromley Councillor and resident. We are delighted to have a copy of the book so that everyone has the opportunity to read this fascinating tale" said Councillor David McBride, the Mayor of Bromley, who was on hand to receive the book.
The book was presented by the author Jean Michel Darrouman and his father Michel Darrouman, Mayor of Pinderes in south west France, where Councillor Griffin found himself after his plane was shot down. Councillor Griffin's son John, who has written an English commentary to accompany the French text was also present, along with two local members of the British Torch of Remembrance, an organisation to honour fallen soldiers.
A copy of the account is available in the Bromley Archives. If you would like to see it please contact Bromley Local Studies & Archives 020 8461 7170 or emaillocalstudies.library@bromley.gov.uk quoting reference number 2191.
