Description:
This year marks the 70th anniversary of The Battle of Britain, the largest air battle in history. This famous battle was fought mainly over the skies of Kent and there are a number of events taking place this year across the county to mark this historic occasion and celebrate the ‘Bravery of the Few’, which is to be the tag-line for the commemorations. These include a major even t at the National Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne in July, the War and Peace show in Paddock Wood in July also, and of course the milestone will be marked at the Biggin Hill Air Fair this year in June.
The Air Fair, staged at the most famous RAF station of World War 2 Biggin Hill Airfield, will stage a commemorative airfield attack and themed aerial display. Realism will be achieved through the use of pyrotechnics and giant video screens in an attempt to recreate the summer of 1940.
The event will, of course, be all about the aircraft and this year it will host the aircraft which featured prominently in the skies during the Battle of Britain. This includes Spitfires, Hurricanes and the ME109. Biggin Hill Air Fair is always able to demonstrate its strategic importance in the battle as the aircraft will fly with the back drop of Central London. The event will also have very special guests which include veterans from 1940 and both air and ground crew who served at Biggin Hill during the war. The veterans will be made up of all of the nationalities who flew from RAF Biggin Hill during 1940, including, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Eire, France, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa and USA.
