Description:
Cray Wanderers, thought by some to be the second oldest football club in the world, has produced plans showing its proposed new ground in St Mary Cray. The team, which currently shares Hayes Lane with Bromley FC, is looking to build the ground as part of a complex which contains a hotel, fitness centre, football academy and a club shop. The stadium itself would hold a capacity crowd of 5,000. The area that is proposed for the ground, in Sandy Lane, already lends itself to leisure activities such as fishing, golf and dry slope skiing.
The plans are not plain sailing; the next stage is for the club to meet with the Greater London Authority to discuss any infringements the proposals have on green belt land. If the plans are given final approval the club expects to start the season in 2014 at their new home.
Cray Wanderers were formed in 1860. Their claim to be the second oldest club in the world is a difficult one to prove as there are so many other clubs with sketchy records before 1860. An undisputed fact however is that Cray Wanders certainly is the oldest association football club in Greater London.
