Description:
Further to the draft London Plan drawn up by London Mayor, Boris Johnson, it is planned to double the number of gypsy and traveller sites across London. As part of this plan the London Borough of Bromley is being expected to increase the number of pitches it has by over 160%, from 36 to 94.
The requirement is based on the Fordham Report, a study which was commissioned by former London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, which concluded that gypsies and travellers could not be expected to live in houses as they have a ‘psychological aversion to bricks and mortar’.
The existing travellers sites in the borough are situated in Star Lane and Old Maidstone Road, in St Mary Cray and St Paul’s Cray, at the moment the plan does not include details of whether pitches would be provided at these sites or whether new sites would need to be made available.
