Description:
Penge police station, the oldest working police station in London is due to be closed and sold. The police station was opened in 1872 and is thought to be the oldest working police station in London, but it is earmarked for closure as part of the Metropolitan Police Authority's modernisation programme. Following the closure, the last traditional police station left in the borough is the main one at Bromley High Street. The sale of Penge Police Station is the last stage of this programme, this follows the closure of Beckenham Police Station in 2007.The moderniation programme has seen traditional police stations close and be replaced by 'Safer Neighbourhod Bases', Penge will now be served by the Penge, Cator and Crystal Palace base which is situated in Maple Road. There are now 14 bases in the London Borough of Bromley. It is thought that the new bases are safer and more accessible to all areas of the community, including the disabled.
The new counters are not 24 hour, the only police station in the borough that is open 24 hours a day is in Bromley High Street, the Penge base at Maple Road is open Monday-Friday, 11am-3pm and 4pm-7pm.
