Description:
Bromley Council will soon be rolling out new rubbish and recycling collection timetable across the entire borough. This is following the perceived success of a trial scheme involving 27,500 households in various areas of Bromley, including Chatterton Village.
The new scheme introduces kitchen waste collections to all households on a weekly basis along with paper and cardboard waste. But general rubbish collection and other recycling items such as glass, cans and plastics will now be collected fortnightly. According to Bromley Council statistics the trial scheme saw an increase in recycling from a quarter of all weekly rubbish to an impressive 52%.
The households involved in the trial scheme have largely been positive about the changes, according to Councillor Colin Smith there is a 74% approval rating with only 7% against. The scheme is not without its problems though according to Anna Dedman, a resident of Chatterton Village who have had the scheme for over a year. “Whilst the general idea of increasing the amount of recycling we do is good, there does seem to be a miscalculation in when each kind of recycling is collected. Whilst general waste collection every two weeks is not a problem, having to put all of your glass, plastics and tins into one small box to be collected every two weeks is pretty ridiculous, the box is full after 2 days”.
She added “Why can’t this recycling be collected every week and the paper be collected every 2 weeks. After all, paper lies flat in the box and is easier to store where as you can’t crush most glass and tins?”
Households who are due to join the scheme will be notified shortly of the changes before the timetable changes next month.
