A team of entrepreneurs have announced their intention to take over The George in Hayes Street so Bromley will soon be boasting a brand new pub and restaurant that will embrace the future but won’t forget its history as an original coaching inn. This iconic building has been given a new lease of life having been lovingly renovated with considerable panache to give it a stylish, modern feel whilst promising to keep its traditional roots alive. The official opening will take place on Friday 10th September.
Originally a coaching inn in this small local village, this is a building steeped in local history. Hayes being the birthplace of Britain’s youngest ever Prime Minster William Pitt and where the coaches of the rich and famous swept into the grounds of Hayes Place opposite the pub. Its biggest claim to fame in 1852 was a pub sign painted by the artist John Everett Millais, a co-founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. It was thought the painting was gifted to the pub as a novelty or in payment of a bill and then subsequently lost or painted over. If ever found, it would be worth more than the pub itself!
“We’ve definitely got something special here and that’s because we’ve put a lot of thought into every facet of this pub – the food, the surroundings and the welcome from the team.” Said General Manager Alison Oliver “The result is a pub with real ambience and delicious food and we look forward to launching officially where everyone is welcome”.
The interior designers have created a feeling of occasion in the dining room, with modern chunky wooden tables and chairs, interesting artefacts and especially commissioned original pieces of artwork. There is also stylish bar with shabby chic mismatched furniture to slouch into.
Fresh produce is at the heart of the menu, which offers traditional British classics alongside mellow Mediterranean dishes and favourites such as fish and chips, succulent steaks and piping hot oven fired pizzas. Behind the swinging doors of the kitchen is Head Chef Shane Kesby who will be conjuring up unstuffy tasty dishes and daily fresh specials served with flamboyant flair.
Working closely with their wine partners the group have created their very own exclusive blends and even design their own wine labels. Of course there are all the usual suspects that everyone loves and also a great selection of cask ales, super chilled draft and bottled beers so there’s something to quench everyone’s thirst.
