Bromley made a winning start to the new season in the Blue Square South with a 2-1 win over Dorchester Town, but the Lillywhites made hard work of it.
After just 7 minutes a clumsy foul on the edge of the box by Jerome Sobers gifted Dorchester a free kick and a chance of an opening. Dorchester full back Ryan Hill duly took that chance with a powerful free kick that came off of the woodwork before settling into the back of the Bromley net. McDonnell then came close for Bromley before Ryan Hill narrowly missed the crossbar with another effort from a free kick.
Bromley, who were fielding four debutants, equalised in fortuitous circumstances after 34 minutes when Wes Daly’s tame shot from the edge of the area deflected off an unaware Paul Vines completely deceiving the Dorchester keeper.
Bromley were presented with a gift to take the lead just before half time when the hapless Dorchester keeper, Regan Coward, fouled Bromley forward McDonnell when he was clear in the six yard box. The keeper escaped with a yellow card and was doubly fortunate to see McDonnell fire the resulting penalty kick high over the crossbar.
Dorchester started the second period again the stronger of the two teams, Butler in the Bromley goal was called on to take care of a number of long balls punted up to the Dorchester forwards, as well as saving another free kick from the dangerous Hill.
Bromley brought on Warren McBean and the change paid dividends as he was picked out by Tony Finn with a superb free kick before powering a close range header into the Dorchester net.
Dorchester finished strongly and Hill saw another superb free kick turned round the post by Butler, before being handed his best chance yet with a penalty kick. Bromley’s Jerome Sobers brought Ryan Moss crashing down inside the box, earning himself a second yellow card and an early bath in the process. But Ryan Hill was again denied by Jamie Butler as the Bromley custodian turned his spot kick round the post with five minutes to go, ensuring that Bromley would take all three points on their start to the new season.
