Description:
A park in Bromley has recently been awarded a prestigious national award which has recognised it as one of the best open green spaces in the country. Bromley Palace Park has been given ‘Green Flag’ status for the first time and it is thanks to the extensive work carried out by Bromley Council, the local community and the Thyme Out team. The Thyme Out scheme is a project to improve the life chances of people with learning disabilities through free accredited horticultural training that leads to increased independence and job opportunities.
Bromley Palace Park is tucked away behind Bromley Civic Centre and even local residents would struggle to pinpoint the location of this hidden town centre open space. It stretches out over 14 acres and includes woodland and open areas as well as sites of historical and cultural importance. It is difficult to believe that the bustling town centre is only a stone’s throw away!
Like the Blue Flag awards given to beaches for high environmental standards, the Green Flag is similarly awarded for parks, gardens and natural open spaces within England and Wales. It is considered the national standard by which the best open spaces in the land are judged against. The award considers a number of factors including cleanliness of the space, sustainability and environmental impact and how the space interacts with the local community. Bromley Palace Park ticks all of the above and will proudly fly its deserved Green Flag.
