Description:
Hundreds of people in the London Borough of Bromley are dying before their time every year, from conditions and diseases caused by traffic pollution in the borough.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, commissioned a study which was undertaken by the Institute of Occupational Medicine, the findings of which showed that there were an average of 217 premature deaths caused by traffic pollution in the borough every year.
The worst affected areas had 12 deaths each every year and these were Penge & Cator, Clock House and Cray Valley West. But not far behind with 11 deaths each were Bromley Town, Chelsfield, Chislehurst, Copers Cope, Cray Valley East and, somewhat surprisingly, the ward of Pratts Bottom.
The area covered by Darwin ward (mainly Biggin Hill) came out as the least polluted place in the borough with only 3 deaths per year.
Bromley Labour Party leader and ward councillor for Penge & Cator, John Getgood, has called on the Mayor of London to do more to tackle the problem.
