Playschool Presenter is Baroness of Beckenham

07 July 2010

Description:

Floella Benjamin has become the Baroness of Beckenham.  The famous 1980’s children’s TV presenter, associated with Playschool and Play Away, has been appointed a peer in the House of Lords for the Liberal Democrat party.

Baroness Benjamin spent her youth in Beckenham, her parents lived there for over 30 years and are buried at Beckenham Cemetery, and this is the reason she chose Beckenham for her title, despite now residing in nearby Dulwich.

The sixty year old Baroness currently runs her own TV production company, Floella Benjamin Productions Ltd as well as being the vice president of children’s charity Barnado’s.  She is also the Chancellor of the University of Exeter.  Lady Benjamin is also a tireless charity worker and also set up Touching Success, which strives to help youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve success in their life.

On her website she comments, “I have been made a Lib-Dem Baroness!  In the House of Lords I will be devoting much energy to the well being of children and young people...”
